How to Start a Daily 5-Minute Meditation Habit (With a Little Help from Doge and Kobe)

DogeDharma and Kobe meditating above the clouds

Most of us don't need another big goal. We need a small one we can actually keep.

That's how I think about meditation. Not an hour on a cushion. Not a perfectly quiet mind. Just a few minutes, most days, where you stop, breathe, and soften a little.

If you've tried to start a meditation habit before and it slipped away, you're in good company. Here's a gentle way to begin again, using the free guided sits here at DogeDharma.

Start smaller than you think

Five minutes a day is a lovely goal. But on day one, I'd start even smaller.

The shortest guided sit in the house is One Kind Breath, at 1:46. One slow breath in, and a longer breath out. That's really it. And if you only have a minute, the Sit page has a one-minute soft sit. You press start and sit with the quiet while a ring keeps soft time.

Small isn't cheating. Small is how habits take root. A two-minute sit you come back to every day will carry you further than a long one you keep putting off.

Give your sit a home in the day

Habits like a home. Give yours one.

Mornings work well for a lot of people. The Morning Soft Sit (2:33) asks you to "sit tall enough to feel awake, soft enough to feel kind." Others do better at night. Evening Wind Down (5:17) is a slow, soft walk through the body, to help you set the day down before sleep.

Choose the time that fits your real life, not your ideal one. Then try to keep it about the same each day. On the Meditation page there's also a gentle "Remind me to sit" option, with a morning and an evening nudge you can turn off anytime.

Let the guided sit do the work

A lot of what makes starting hard is the quiet worry: "Am I doing this right?" A guided sit takes that off your plate. You press play and follow along.

All eight sits are free, with no sign-up. They run from under two minutes to about five:

  • One Kind Breath (1:46): one slow breath in, and a longer breath out
  • Quiet Reset (2:12): feet on the floor, a few breaths in a busy moment
  • Morning Soft Sit (2:33): a gentle start to the day
  • Thank You Breath (2:50): notice one small thing, and thank it with a breath
  • Soften and Rest (3:22): let the body arrive before the mind does
  • Kind Steps (3:56): a walking practice, one kind step at a time
  • Loving Kindness (4:34): a quiet wish of ease, beginning with yourself
  • Evening Wind Down (5:17): let the day come to a close

When you feel ready to grow, just move one step down the list. That's your path to five minutes.

If sitting still feels hard, that's okay too. Try Kind Steps.

When your mind wanders (it will)

Your mind will wander. That isn't failing. Noticing that you drifted, and coming back, is the practice itself.

The Morning Soft Sit puts it simply: "If thoughts arrive, greet them kindly... then return to the breath." Soften and Rest says it another way: "If the mind wanders, that is okay... Kindly come back to the breath."

So be gentle with yourself when it happens. You'd be gentle with a friend, or with a pup who wandered off on a walk.

Missed a day? Begin again

You'll miss days. Everyone does. A missed day is just a missed day. It doesn't erase the ones before it.

When it happens, don't try to make up for it with a long sit. Go back to the smallest one. One Kind Breath is always there. Begin again, softly.

Carry it into the rest of your day

Every sit here ends with the house promise, Do Only Good Everyday. Morning Soft Sit, One Kind Breath, and Soften and Rest close on those words. The other five close on "Do only good, every day." That's the heart of the house. The quiet minutes aren't only for you. They help you show up a little softer for the people, and the pets, around you.

One of the tips on the Meditation page is called Do One Good Thing: "Before the day runs away, choose one small kindness โ€” a message, a held door, a soft word." A short sit, then one good thing. That's a good day.

A soft invitation

If you'd like to begin today, pick one sit on the Meditation page and press play. Or open the Sit page and breathe with Doge for one minute, four counts in and six counts out.

And if you'd like a small reminder on your wall, the posters in the shop are there for that. You can check out with a card on Etsy.
